A desk for
the first draft.

Start with useful source material and a specific reader. These invented passages and preparation notes give you something concrete to work with.

How the counts work

Words are groups separated by whitespace; a hyphenated term counts as one word. Characters count Unicode code points, including spaces and line breaks. Paragraphs are nonempty blocks separated by a blank line. These are transparent working counts, not a quotation or a timing estimate.

Handover note

The archive is arranged by project, then by date. Keep the original filename when adding a new document.

Before closing a project, place the final brief and the approved copy in the same folder. Add a short note explaining any decisions that the next reader will need.

Editorial brief

This guide is for a reader opening the archive for the first time. Explain where to begin, what each folder contains, and whom to ask when something is missing.

Use short headings. Keep the original labels when they help readers match the guide to the files.

The draft should include a contents list and a short glossary.
