Clearer by designLesson 3 / 3

Let a fresh pair
of eyes decide.

Objective: compare the reading order you intended with what another person notices.

You already know the message, so it is hard to meet your design as a stranger. A short reading test reveals where your assumptions differ from someone else’s.

Try a five-second test.

  1. Show the poster to someone for about five seconds. Do not explain it first.
  2. Hide it. Ask, “What was that about?” Then, “What would you do next?”
  3. Write down their words. Change the part they missed, then test again.

One response is a useful clue, not proof that everyone will read the same way.

Read a worked example

Intention: “A free evening garden event.”
Reader said: “Something happening on Friday.”
Next change: Make Night Garden the clearest first stop and add a short description of the event.
